the Maximum City of the future at the Mumbai Infrastructure Summit - 2018Infrajetting the india Growth story

Mumbai, the financial capital of India has to deal with heavy rainfall every year, which disrupts the busy life of its residents who power the commercial heart of India. The impact of a slowdown or disruption are felt across the length and breath of the country. A recent report credited to Brookings puts the GDP of the capital of Maharashtra at $310 billion, which is over 6 percent of nation's GDP, 10 percent of factory employment, 60 percent of customs duty collection, and 30 percent of income tax collections. Mumbai is ranked sixth among the top ten cities with most billionaires; the city has presence of 28 billionaires. Internationally significant Indian companies like the Tata Group, Reliance Industries, Aditya Birla Group, Larsen & Toubro, Godrej Group, and Hindustan Petroleum are headquartered in Mumbai, which also houses the Reserve Bank of India, National Stock Exchange, and Bombay Stock Exchange.

The infrastructural health of Mumbai therefore has a bearing on the overall health of the Indian economy. It was therefore in the fitness of things that the conference was graced by reputed experts like Prof M.N Sreehari, advisor to the government of Karnataka for traffic, transport and infrastructure, who was also the conference chairman, Member of Parliament Rahul Shewale, Dr. Ranjit Patil, the Minister of State for Urban Development, GOI, Prof. M. Prof. M. N. Sreehari spoke on issues like waste management pollution, disasters due to unprecedented rainfall, road construction practices, innovative new materials, local trains, the lifeline of Mumbai, air travel, and road transport.

Dr Porwal VSM, the former ADG-Border Roads, suggested measures to stabilise slope type pavement for hill road gradients, and on mastic asphalt as a sustainable material. He also dwelt on how landslides can be avoided if the slope is made stable through measures like the planting of vegetarian, and construction of retaining structures that are responsive to terrain and climate. He also spoke of the uses of composite pavement and the importance of systematic geological investigation.

Among the ideas discussed at the summit were road design methodology, innovative materials, construction practices, drainage and challenges of road construction in coastal, heavy rain fall areas with case studies that focused on financial aspects as well. The conference also focused on all-weather airports and uninterrupted train operations as the city has faced torrential rains that have caused the shutting down of entire airports despite being equipped with advanced Instrument Landing System (ILS). The same has been a cause with the local train networks that have shut down wherever the tracks get flooded.
