Holidays are fun. However, when it is at the cost of work, it affects overall productivity, which in turn, affects economic growth. Mumbai city, with its stock exchanges worth trillions of dollars in market capitalisation, its ultra-luxurious million-dollar apartments and a civic authority generally known to be the richest in Asia, is nevertheless brought to its knees every year with just a few hours of rain. The city’s population is forced to take days off, and the damage and flooding caused by water-logging affect all and sundry, and all this, without counting the costs of suffering and misery and on occasion, loss of life.

Much more is needed to be done other than praising the city’s unshakeable spirit. Join us at Construction Times as we seek to do just that. We will address the issues plaguing the city’s infrastructure head-on. The expert panelists will discuss the hurdles and challenges, and the gaps and the holes, which lead to cracks in buildings and potholes on the roads. The loss of life due to bad infrastructure has become too common-place and something must be done. This one-of-a-kind-conference proposes to focus on the policy environment, the bureaucracy and the administration who are together responsible for delivering a world-class city as befits the financial capital of the fastest growing economy in the world.

If Mumbai city aspires to further improve its contribution to the nation’s GDP, deliver a good quality of life to its inhabitants and attract global investment, we must fix the basic necessities. Waste disposal, waste water treatment, good roads, open spaces, amenities for children and for the elderly – the city must embrace holistic development.

Balancing this need for development with care and concern for the fragile environmental ecosystem around us, development must not be at the cost of the mangrove cover which protects this coastal city. The conference will dwell on this at length, on the issues of right to livelihood for the fishing community, the age-old local inhabitants of the city and on the topic of development that is sustainable.
