The awards were distributed in the presence of Sanjay Kumar, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs; Lt Gen (Retd) Rakesh Loomba, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways and Civil Aviation; R Ganesan, Head, Corporate Centre, L&T; Sabyasachi Das, CEO, L&T Edu Tech; Pangkhuri Borgohain, GM - Industry Collaborations, NSDC; and Narendra Deshpande, CEO, CSDCI.
The Council also signed an industry agreement with Larsen & Toubro as it has already recognised Larsen & Toubro's eight Construction Skill Training Institutes and one Skill Training Academy as 'Exclusive Centres'. These centres are now being upgraded as 'Centres of Excellence' not only for domestic requirements but also for overseas skilling requirements.
Speaking on the award felicitation, Deshpande said that Vishwakarma Jayanti is a day of celebration for Vishwakarma, a Hindu god, a craftsmen's deity, the divine architect and engineer. He is considered as 'swayambhu' and creator of the world.
“We at the Construction Skill Development Council of India take pride in recognising the hard work and skills of this talented workforce. Qualified construction craftsmen are the key to successful, sustainable infrastructure building activity. It is their effectiveness and efficiency which determines the industry's efficiency levels. It is their efforts which transform the designs into building infrastructure we have the luxury to enjoy today.”
He further mentioned that the Vishwakarma Jayanti is a big day of celebration for the construction sector, especially the craftsmen who work at the construction sites. It is only the craftsman who makes architects and engineers designs come true. Craftsmen are key elements of the construction industry, as they bring to life the construction designs. The craftsmen have a big role in taking India to a $5 trillion economy.
Deshpande said that in this competitive world, it is imperative to establish an edge. As CSDCI is mandated to serve the larger cause of the industry, we are happy to announce that all the Qualification Packs developed by CSDCI will now have Standards of Productivity, Quality, Safety and more importantly 'Ease of Working Norms' from the construction workforce point of view covering all current and prospective job roles as appropriate. This is predominantly to increase awareness on right to work in safe and convenient manner. The first phase of this for 57 job roles will be completed in 16 weeks. The endeavour is to complete the current and prospective qualifications.
CSDCI is also undertaking counselling and career guidance for all those aspiring for life in construction industry which is being addressed through a 2-minute job role audio-video in all major Indian languages. These 2-minute job role audio-video will be available across all modes. It also announced association with Larsen & Toubro's Edu Tech as 'Knowledge Partners' for higher levels of educations. It announced industry agreement with Tata Steel for 'Cut & Bend' & 'Smart Fab' being manufactured in factories and supplied to construction sites. Right from creating 'Qualification Pack' for various job roles as may be required to creating subject matter experts, master trainers, trainers, master assessors, assessors, learning content and conducting the skilling as a fee-based scheme specially to promote and motivate people take up this as a career option.
Sabyasachi Das, CEO, L&T Edu Tech, in his speech said that technology is changing fast and a new trend has come into play. “We are looking on how we can help the colleges to equip them. We take the knowledge of our engineers back to the colleges. The way we do things is also changing. Data science is also changing and all our vocational workforce should be up to date in technology transformation. The most important point is doing things without making a mistake and delivering things right in the first attempt. We have partnered with some of the leading institute and we want to maximize their skill and make their future,” he noted.
R Ganesan, Head, Corporate Centre, L&T, in his comment said that after pandemic, two years went by and two set of people were working day and night, one was in the health sector and the other in the construction sector. “Skilling the construction workers demands training of the job at the site, and as a training partner will ensure a skilled workforce in the coming days.”
He further mentioned that in the next five to seven years, lots of things are there in the pipeline like Gati Shakti and National Infrastructure Pipeline and nearly $1.5 trillion spending will take place in infrastructure sector.
Sanjay Kumar, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs emphasized that we have to look at the solution to make the construction sector an aspirational sector. Registration of workers needs to be done as the construction sector is the biggest employer, and if we have to reach the goal of $5 trillion economy.
CSDCI also released research reports on Mapping PAN India 'Demand & Supply Clusters along with Academic Clusters', and Desk Research Report on 'International Manpower Requirements'. Also, one minute Audio Video on Launching CSDCI as 'Super Incubator' was released on the occasion.
