India's roads & highways development has seen significant progress over the past decade. The National Highway network expanded by 60%, from 91,287 km in 2014 to 146,195 km by 2024. In the fiscal year 2023-24, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) aimed to construct between 12,000 and 13,000 km of national highways, marking the second-highest annual achievement. Additionally, eight major high-speed corridor projects spanning 936 km have been approved, with an investment of Rs 50,655 crore, expected to enhance connectivity and economic growth. These developments also present multiple opportunities for Volvo CE India to contribute to and benefit from the nation's expanding infrastructure landscape.
What is your view on the roads and highways development in the country in the year 2025-26?
India's road and highway development in 2025-26 is poised for significant advancements. The government has set a target to construct 10,000 km of national highways, including 5,800 km of high-speed corridors. The budgetary allocation for the MoRTH has seen a modest increase of 3% to Rs 287,333 crore for FY26. Key projects like the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, and Bangalore-Chennai Expressway are expected to enhance connectivity and reduce travel time. Additionally, the completion of the Z-Morh tunnel in Sonamarg, Kashmir, will provide year-round accessibility to previously isolated regions. With the rapid development of India’s construction landscape, Volvo CE India will also continue to focus on delivering high-quality, reliable, and sustainable construction equipment that meets the demands of modern road development.
