How do you assess the growth opportunity in India?

We can expect a lot of development activity over the next decade, especially in the infra and development projects with an increased demand for engineering equipment. There is a lot of space for manufacturers, but the performance parameters have become the key to this market with contractors looking at return on investment (ROI ).

We are the world's largest manufacturer of diesel engines and our engines meet the latest worldwide emission norms with a range extending from 50 HP to 600 HP. We are upbeat about the Indian market and are ready with the engines meeting the future BS6, CEV4 and CPCB 4+ norms for vehicles, on- road & off- road equipment, power generation applications respectively.

Brief us on the manufacturing facility and your road map?

We have set up a small manufacturing facility in Pune, Maharashtra and is primarily focussed on manufacturing engines from 150 HP to 600 HP, meeting the latest emission norms. We have just installed a test cell for testing engines up to 2000 kW.

We are one of the few manufacturers with our mother plant in Weifang, China who had migrated to the common rail platform way back in the year 2009. Ever since, we have been rolling out from our worldwide plants around 500,000CRS engines per annum, which has now enabled consolidate our position in the market for multiple applications.

Incidentally, we have over 4000 CRS engines operating in the India market for earthmoving, cranes and other applications. We have charted out our roadmap to expand our product range, as well as capacity for the India market.            [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]What is the capacity range?

Catering to the high horsepower segment of 200 to 600 HP, presently we have a limited capacity of around 10,000 engines per annum with provision for expansion, as the need arises.

What do you think of the cost factor?  Will that be going to be a deterrent?

Though we have high end products, the import tariffs will be a bottleneck. We have large expansion and investment plans, wherein we will work towards indigenisation to eventually become cost competitive.

What are the ongoing trends as far as your R&D is concerned?

We have managed to retain the No 1 spot in terms of engine manufacturing volumes thanks to our strong R&D wing with over 2500 personnel. We are also working on multiple projects covering the AI platform, as well as hydrogen powered cells. We are putting up a dedicated R&D centre in Pune and will work on independent projects recruiting local talent. We expect to commence operations by March 2020,[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]What is your road map to strengthen the service set up?

Our strength has been aftermarket -support. We have skillsets at our dealership points to effectively handle the field service. We work on a single-window-solutions concept so that the customer need not approach multiple points to avail services. Presently we have a very strong marine dealer network providing sales and service along the coastline with over 150 touch points. We have a market share of over 50% in the marine segment.

How do you assess the export potential?

We intend to focus on making India one of our manufacturing hubs catering to the India market, as well as the south Asian countries, such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives to start with and then extend to the middle east and Africa too.

You are operating from single plant based in Pune?

Investment & expansion is not a bottleneck. We are a USD 50 billion group with an array of engineering products that extend from power train systems ( Engines - diesel, gas ) , gearbox, axles, hydraulics to fully built trucks & bus (diesel, gas & EV). Being the largest manufacturer of diesel & gas engines, we supply to applications such as trucks, bus, earthmoving & construction, agri etc and meet the latest international emission norms.

Presently, we manufacturer engines and supply other products through the trading route.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]What is the investment you are looking at?

We are putting up a small R&D centre with about 80 to 100 personnel which will be in place by March 2020. We are in serious talks with potential parties to introduce our various products & services through JV's, kit supplies , acquisitions etc. and are optimistic of few projects in the pipeline materialising in the short run.

Could you elaborate on your operating philosophy?

We believe that the customer is king. Customer trend is shifting towards wanting high-end products with technological superiority. Our philosophy has been to maintain a platform of products that are one of the leaders in technology and performance in the field, adapting to various conditions worldwide.

Some of our leading brands are WEICHAI, BAUDOUIN, PSI ( diesel& gas engines), FASTGEAR ( Gearboxes), HANDE ( axles) , LINDE ( hydraulics), ASIASTAR ( Diesel, gas & EV), trucks ( SHACMAN, SINOTRUK, SHENGDA) , to name few.

What are the initiatives on training and skilling up of employees?

It is essential that our sales and service personnel within the organisation, as well as at our dealership points are equipped to handle our esteemed clientele and provide the best-in-class service. For this, we have a scheduled training programme for our sales, technical, service personnel to confidently be the front line of our task force and handle the business with confidence.

Where do you see your company in the next five years in India?

We are one of the few global players with an array of high-end engineering products and are very bullish about the India market. I think it is the right time to build a stronghold of our products setting up a strong base in India, catering to the Indian market, as well as using India as an export hub. I am sure you will see some activity shortly.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
