Can you outline some of the ongoing infrastructural projects undertaken by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to decongest Mumbai?
To decongest Mumbai, projects like Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road and Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road have been carried out and further widening of all roads as per DP 2034 is being carried out in phased manner.
For connectivity between Eastern and Western Suburbs, the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project is being carried out, which will connect Goregaon and Mulund. The 8-lane Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) is under construction, having two under-sea tunnels and 10.58-km long freeway that would run along Mumbai's western coastline connecting Marine Lines in the south to existing Bandra-Worli Sea Link in the north.
What technology is needed to keep the Mumbai roads pothole-free and what steps are taken by BMC in this regard?
To keep the roads pothole-free, new technologies like Rapid Hardening Concrete is being used on experimental basis for pothole filling. Use of Geo-Polymer Concrete and Reactive Asphalt Technology is also under consideration.
As per reports, Mumbai will be concretising its asphalt roads in the coming years. What measures have been initiated? What is the cost involved and what is the progressing of tendering?
New tenders for approximately 400 km roads for concretisation have been called with approximate estimate cost of Rs 5,000 crore and according to tentative schedule, work orders will be issued in this October.
What initiatives are BMC taking to provide skilled labour force to the construction industry?
BMC has its own training centre, Civic Training Institute & Research Centre (CTI & RC) based in Borivli. At this centre, regular training programs are conducted for BMC employees, right from labours to Chief Engineers of various departments of BMC.
