What is your overview on the Indian CE market revival in the post-Covid scenario?

We see the construction equipment market growing significantly and Cummins has done requisite investments in its products and capacity to address the future growth.

Cummins also continues to strive towards developing products that meet the requirements of a changing emission regulatory landscape, which gives it an opportunity to make its products more environment-friendly.

Cummins is displaying its state-of-the-art latest range of products, B4.5 (121 hp to 173) and B6.7 (173 to 260 hp), compliant with CEV BS IV norms. These products are flexible to cater to the wide range of construction equipment industry requirements. These products are capable and scalable to next emission level of CEV BS V and CEMM BS IV/V. This will ensure that these product offerings will continue to remain mainstay offerings for Cummins, among others, for this decade.

These new products with advance technologies would require skilled manpower to service them. The same would remain a key differentiator on the product performance and end-user experience. Cummins has significant experience of handling these advance technologies globally. While engineering teams in India have worked on these technologies to support global developments, Cummins service teams are also fully equipped and experienced in handling these technologies as they have been working on the other market segments (on-highway) where these technologies were implemented since 2017 onwards.

What kind of demand are you experiencing for your products and solutions in OEM and after-market?

Demand for construction equipment in India has been growing continuously on the back of increased infrastructure investments. Further production of these equipment in India is increasing as we see more OEMs entering India, existing OEMs localizing their products for Indian market and increasing exports out of India. All this supports Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives of the Government of India and thus helps create demand for locally manufactured components including powertrain.

Cummins is a leading global powertrain manufacturer and is well positioned to capture the trend of local manufacturing. Powertrain is a key component for the construction equipment. With large manufacturing footprint in India and strong relationships with most of the global construction equipment manufacturers, Cummins is providing locally manufactured powertrain to our customers and thus helping OEMs to increase local content.

With durable product performance, strong local engineering and application teams and nationwide network to support end-users, Cummins has been able to maintain its leadership position in the construction equipment powertrain market.

What is the one major challenge faced by the Indian CE market currently? What are your suggestions to iron out this challenge?

Amid pandemic last year, construction equipment industry underwent emission norm change. As we are moving towards stringent emission norms, the product complexities are increasing in terms of additional electronics and after treatment system. We are taking the opportunity during this Excon to showcase our latest range of products meeting the stringent emission standards.

Cummins provides powertrain solutions, and these products are governed by the emission standards. With growing emission and environmental concerns, we are seeing emission norms getting tighter. Latest emission standards (CEV BS IV) call for >90% reduction in some of the pollutants, compared to the earlier standards. The same gets further tighter with the next phase of emissions (CEV BS V). To meet these tighter emission standards, we need advance electronically controlled engines with active after treatment system.

While this brings as a challenge to upgrade the products, at Cummins we see this as an opportunity to serve the market and offer cleaner and greener products. Cummins is a global powertrain supplier and have significant experience with tighter emission standards across the world. This along with Cummins India manufacturing and strong engineering and development teams puts Cummins at leading position to support our customers in making the change smooth.

Cummins is a fully integrated powertrain supplier with full scale capability of designing and manufacturing advance after-treatment systems. With new emission standards requiring after-treatment system, this brings significant growth opportunity for Cummins.

What are your plans at EXCON this year? Are you launching any products?

This year at EXCON, Cummins in India offers a broad portfolio of power solutions to cater to the construction equipment segment. Delivering on its brand promise of dependability, Cummins also provides the best aftermarket support and has an extensive service support network that offers a complete range of service needs.
