Data centers today are one of the largest consumers of electricity. How critical is it to ensure uninterrupted power supply as well as efficient power management systems inside the data center for smooth operations?

Our world has moved to a remote working model ever since the pandemic hit. Since then, organizations and governments are looking at experimenting with hybrid working models and, in the process, the amount of data being generated and consumed has increased manifold. In order to manage and process these large amounts of data, data centers have become more crucial than even before.

A major pain point for organizations in India thus far has been the intermittent supply and quality of power. While the government is coming out with initiatives like “Power for all”, the need for efficient infrastructure solutions is crucial to support organizations during any downtime. In a country like India where power cuts are a common affair, organizations need to be equipped with the right kind of back-up solutions to ensure uninterrupted supply of power. It is important that organizations are enabled with efficient and reliable IT infrastructure to support connectivity and operations round the clock.

Here's where power management solutions like uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), DC power systems and power distribution systems, industrial AC and DC systems, static transfer switches, power control and monitoring solutions, are critical for organizations to ensure their data centers function smoothly. Unplanned downtime due to power failures can impact every aspect of a business. Adopting reliable power solutions will help protect mission-critical networks and ensure continuity of operations.

As data centres are a 24×7 application, efficiency is of prime importance as data centers are massive power guzzlers. Vertiv's efficient power and cooling systems can ensure reduction in operational costs for customers, as well as a greener environment.

How does Vertiv support the data center infrastructure? Tell us about your range of solutions and how is it benefiting customers in reducing cost and provide the convenience of agility, flexibility, space optimization, etc?

Secure and reliable data center net working has become critical as the dependency as well as utilization of data centers increases. As companies now conduct hybrid models of business, secure network connections are imperative and the continuity requirement for networks will increase. In such a scenario, Vertiv has been supporting businesses with its diverse range of technologies and solutions. Our portfolio includes Vertiv™ SmartCabinet™, Vertiv™ SmartRow™, Vertiv™ SmartAisle™ and Vertiv™ SmartMod™ prefabricated solutions, which include racks, power, cooling, and management of critical IT. These customizable prefabricated systems can help increase energy savings by up to 28% and increase rack density up to 60% over tradition systems. Vertiv also provides solutions to support organizations' colocation and cloud requirements with products like Liebert DSE Packaged Free-Cooling, Liebert EFC Indirect Evaporative Free cooling System and Liebert EXL S1.

Vertiv focuses on 3S: Simplification, Standardization and Speed. The benefits these attributes provide are cost reduction, risk reduction and time saving without any compromise on reliability of solution.

What are the future technologies that the company is excited about? What are your plans for the next 2-3 years for expansion in newer segments, adding more capacity, investments, etc?

In the past year or so, we've witnessed technological transformation like never before. In the coming years, 5G will become mainstream, digitization is already on fast forward, organizations are upping their cyber security requirements and strengthening their existing systems to support the hybrid working model and increased data flow, automation of business processes will increase, and edge computing and Internet of Things (IoT) will become increasingly popular. Additionally, organizations will explore ways to bring large datacenter capabilities to small spaces and the edge.

Remote monitoring of passive infrastructure and remote management of IT devices will become a key requirement for IT managers. Vertiv has brought in some interesting offerings in this space.

Considering the recurrences of natural calamities (such as flooding during monsoon or cyclone) especially in remote areas where such data centers are located, what are the measures taken to ensure that the data center infrastructure remains unaffected?

Being prepared for an unexpected crisis is key priority for all organizations- public and private sector. In the event of a natural disaster, protecting mission critical infrastructure is essential to ensure business continuity. Some of the measures organizations need to put in place to protect data centers are power backup solutions, off-site back-up for data including storage of data on cloud, and constant monitoring of the facility to be able to act quickly when necessary.
