The Thane Municipal Corporation has finalized the detailed project report (DPR) of the 13 km coastal road from Kharegaon to Gaimukh in Thane, paving way for the speedy implementation of the project.
The project will not only ease out the congestion in the city, but will also result in overall development of the city, Niranjan Hiranandani, Co-Founder and MD, Hiranandani Group said.
A 5.5 km stretch of the road passes through the coastal regulation zone (CRZ), where the road will be elevated. As per DPR, a 450 mtr stretch goes through Naval Akbar Camp in Kolshet where the road will be underground.
“With Thane's real estate development being on the fast track, Ghodbunder Road has been among the ideal locations for residential and commercial real estate growth over the past few years. Slew of infrastructure growth has scripted Thane's evolution into a preferred residential destination and also suburban business district attracting corporates to relocate and consolidate their office spaces. The enhanced connectivity covers practically a wide gamut of transport options, ensuring that Thane evolves into a central link for different regions in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR),” he said.
The cost of the entire road project has escalated from Rs 350 crore to Rs 1,200 crore, which the MMRDA will be funding. The road was first proposed in 2007. The road will be a bypass road to the existing Ghodbunder Road, so the current congestion on the road will be reduced.
The width of the road is 40 mtr and around 40 percent of the road passes through CRZ zone so the authority will construct it as an elevated road to minimise damage to the environment.
“While water transport, linking Vasai and Bhayander through Thane to Kalyan and Navi Mumbai will offer a new transport option, Alibaug -Virar multi modal corridor, the tunnel through the National Park linking Thane with western suburbs at Borivali will reduce time taken to access Mumbai's western suburbs by road. The different Metro lines will provide ease of commute to South Mumbai and MMR regions. This additional connectivity will facilitate ease of living for rising residential density and influx of working populace,” Hiranandani said.
