Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra government has approved an allocation of Rs 1340.75 crore for implementing water conservation program to repair and restore water reservoirs in the state.

The program, which will be implemented for three years till March 2023 by the Department of Soil and Water Conservation, will enable improving the irrigation capacity in the state.

“Irrigation projects need to run efficiently to increase prosperity through irrigation. Decentralized water reservoirs have been created in all parts of the state through water conservation systems. The huge benefit of these schemes has been in providing protected irrigation to agriculture as well as for water supply schemes,” the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said in a statement.

In the last 30-40 years, large water reservoirs have been created through the various schemes implemented by the government. However, due to lack of regular maintenance and repair of these water sources, they not being used to its full potential, it said.

Under this scheme, dams, lakes and other reservoirs will be repaired and a project implementation cell, headed by the Chief Engineer and Joint Secretary, will be set up at the state level and at the commissioner level to monitor the progress of the work.
